Description: Ten years ago 1997 was declared the International Year of the Reef (IYOR). This was in response to the increasing threats and loss of coral reefs and associated ecosystems, such as mangroves and sea grasses. IYOR was a global effort to increase awareness and understanding about coral reefs, and support related conservation, research and management efforts.

Description: The XXXVI Congress of the International Association of Hydrogeologists (IAH) in Toyama, Japan will be hosted by the Japanese IAH Chapter. The Congress will address issues of human well-being which depend upon the study and understanding of groundwater science. Human security, eco-security, environmental security or food security, especially under climate change, are becoming major concerns in the world. Groundwater development and management are one of the key factors to ensure a sustainable society and preserve human well-being. The XXXVI IAH Congress will promote scientific understanding of groundwater and related subjects through discussions and knowledge exchange. UNESCO-IHP will co-convene two sessions, on "Groundwater and Natural/Man Induced Disasters" and on "Groundwater under Climate Change/Climate Change Impacts on Groundwater Resources".
